Good afternoon, 12s. Here's a look at what's out there today – Tuesday, July 26 – about your Seattle Seahawks.
The 2022 Seattle Seahawks roster is filled with new faces on both sides of the ball. Seattle's secondary is young, with everyone under the age of 30. As the team looks for young leaders to step up, Pro Football Focus points out three Seahawks cornerbacks who exceeded coverage expectations in 2021.
Pro Football Focus uses many metrics to determine rankings for player performance, including Coverage Rate over Expectation (CROE). This data-based metric calculates a defender's ability to perform above or beyond expectations to succeed in affecting the outcome of a play. PFF's Haley English breaks down the model.
"I built a linear regression model that takes into account the top two principal components, as well as the defender's position, to predict a player's NFL coverage rate. Some players greatly exceeded their NFL combine athleticism, where their actual coverage rate was much higher than their predicted coverage rate from their combine results."
According to English, three Seahawks cornerbacks have done so exceedingly well.
The Seattle Seahawks had the highest Coverage Rate Over Expected from 2019 to 2021, greatly aided by cornerbacks Ugo Amadi and Marquise Blair, who had two of the top-six values in this aspect. However, having a high Coverage Rate Over Expected does not mean the team had the highest average coverage rate. Instead, that's more to say the team drafted players who weren't predicted to have high coverage rates but outperformed their combine results. Here, the Seahawks took those two players and turned their underwhelming combine performance into high coverage rates, but they rank only 11th in terms of their standardized actual coverage rate.
Atop the Top-15 list of cornerbacks charted for CROE is Seahawks cornerback John Reid (10.67), who the team signed to an exclusive rights free agent tender in April.
Seahawks defensive backs Marquise Blair (8.38) and Ugo Amadi (5.97) come in at No.4 and No.6 respectively on the list.
