The Seahawks elevated quarterback Sean Mannion from the practice squad ahead of their Week 14 game against the 49ers, giving them added depth at the position with starter Geno Smith questionable due to a groin injury.
Linebacker Patrick O'Connell was also elevated from the practice squad, giving Seattle extra depth with Jordyn Brooks questionable due to an ankle injury. Additionally, outside linebacker Frank Clark will not travel with the team to Santa Clara (non-injury related/inactive).
Smith, who injured his groin in practice on Thursday, will be a game-day decision, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.
"He just tweaked his groin a little bit yesterday, just kind of stumbled over somebody," Carroll said following Friday's practice.
Asked if Smith will play Sunday against the 49ers, Carroll said, "We'll see. We rested him today."
If Smith can't play, Drew Lock would make his first start since joining the team last year, and Mannion would serve as the backup. Mannion previously spent time with the Seahawks during training camp in 2021, and on the practice squad last year. The former third-round pick out of Oregon State, has appeared in 14 games with three starts in his career. Most recently he was on Minnesota's practice squad before being released last week.
Carroll noted he was impressed with how quickly Mannion jumped back into Seattle's offense after arriving Thursday, saying, "Amazing recall that he can jump back in—he's been with another team here just a couple weeks ago with Minnesota. He's a very special football player in that he has so much command, so that's really a benefit for us."
O'Connell, an undrafted rookie out of Montana, would be making his regular-season NFL debut if he is active on Sunday.
