Pete Carroll Provides Injury Updates Ahead Of Seahawks' Preseason Opener

Updates on Doug Baldwin, Luke Willson, Jeremy Lane and others ahead of the Seahawks' preseason opener in Los Angeles.

The Seahawks will face the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday in their preseason opener, and they'll fly to L.A. with a relatively healthy roster.

That does not, however, mean everyone will play, especially not in a preseason game where the end result won't make a difference in standings. Doug Baldwin, who had a bit of an injury scare Thursday, leaving practice after K.J. Wright fell on his leg, escaped without significant injury, but he didn't practice Friday and won't play Sunday.

"He's fine," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. "(Wright) fell on the back of his leg. He's very lucky he didn't get a big ankle sprain. A little strain in his foot, and he seems to be fine. If he had to jump back he thinks he could jump back and play this weekend."

Also being held out Sunday despite returning to practice will be Tyler Lockett, who is coming back from a broken leg.

Among the notable players who have missed practice recently, Carroll said cornerback Jeremy Lane, who is battling an undisclosed "soft tissue" injury, won't play Sunday, but will return to practice next week. Carroll said earlier in the day on 710 ESPN Seattle that rookie Shaquill Griffin is likely to make the start at right corner in Lane's place.

"He's just on the verge of coming back," Carroll said of Lane. "He's working out really hard, he's able to run and all that. We're just making sure that when he gets back he stays back. When we come back after this game, he'll be practicing."

Luke Willson has been out the past two days with a groin injury Carroll described as "real minor. We're just really making sure we take care of it."

Two of Seattle's biggest free agent additions are expected to be in action. Running back Eddie Lacy and offensive lineman Luke Joeckel both joined the team while recovering from 2016 injuries that required surgery, and while they were limited in the offseason, Carroll said both are ready to go Sunday.

"Eddie's able to play," Carroll said. "He's raring to go."

On Joeckel, Carroll said, "He's ready. He has had a fantastic offseason for us. He was able to do a lot more than we thought he would during OTAs by the tempos we adjusted in practice, and he came in raring to go."

Joeckel has been competing for a starting job at left tackle or left guard, with George Fant and Rees Odhiambo also factoring into the mix at tackle and guard, respectively. Carroll noted that the combination of Fant at tackle and Joeckel at guard has looked especially good thus far.

"He's really determined to capture one of these spots," Carroll said. "Honestly, he looks very good playing next to George at left guard there. He has done fine at left tackle. Those two guys are starting to build a little chemistry, which we think will really help George progress. Luke is a really bright player, communicates beautifully, and really has brought a sense of experience to us that we were looking for."
